Our vision
Every child carries within themselves the person they will become.
At Compass School, we provide children an education that fulfills their intellectual, social, and emotional potential.
Joyful discovery
The child joyfully explores their environment and makes their own discoveries while guided and encouraged by their teachers.
Deep understanding
The child learns with deep understanding because they are allowed to interact thoroughly with the material.
Independent growth
All children share an aspiration to become competent and independent human beings. We aid this desire by providing the best stimuli at the ideal time.
It is the child who is the author of their own education, both in their school years and for a lifetime.

Programs
Our program, from Kindergarten to 8th Grade
Each student follows a personal learning plan with live teachers, printable and hands-on materials, and work they choose and record themselves.
Kindergarten to Grade 3
Kindergarten and Lower Elementary
Concrete materials first: place value, the link between quantity and symbol, the four operations, reading, writing and the first maps and timelines.
Grades 4 to 6
Upper Elementary
Research, creative writing and classic literature; fractions, long division, graphing and early algebra; the study of civilizations, nations, plants and animals.
Grades 7 and 8
Early Adolescent
Deeper independent study across every subject, larger projects, and growing responsibility for planning and recording their own work.
The elementary curriculum
Language
Spelling, word study (antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, compounds and the parts of speech), creative writing and research skills. Children read poetry, folk tales, non-fiction and classic literature, and read aloud often.
Math and geometry
From place value and the four operations to problem solving, fractions, measurement, graphing, long division and algebraic expressions. In geometry, children name lines, angles and shapes and discover congruence, symmetry and equivalence for themselves.
Cultural studies
Botany and zoology: the traits of plants and animals and the kingdoms they belong to, then the child's own research. Geography and history: continents, countries, flags and cultures, time and timelines, and how people's needs for food, shelter, clothing and transport changed across history.
Keeping track of work
Students keep a journal or work plan. They choose their own work, alone or with others, and the record helps them make good choices and shows the teacher what comes next.
